【 摘 要 】
Theory makes ambiguous predictions aboutthe relationship between market structure andcompetitiveness of the banking system and banking sectorstability.Empirical studies focusing on individualcountries provide similarly ambiguous results, whilecross-country studies point mostly to a positiverelationship between competition and stability in thebanking system. Where liberalization and unfetteredcompetition have resulted in fragility, this has been mostlythe consequence of regulatory and supervisory failures. Theadvantages of competition for an efficient and inclusivefinancial system are strong, and regulatory and supervisorypolicies should focus on an incentive-compatible environmentfor banking rather than try to fine-tune market structure orthe degree of competition.
