【 摘 要 】
This paper examines the determinants ofremittance behavior for Vietnam using data from the 2004Vietnam Migration Survey on internal migrants. It considershow, among other things, the vulnerability of amigrant's life at the destination, their link torelatives back home, and the time spent at the destinationaffect remittances. The paper finds that migrants act asrisk-averse economic agents and send remittances back to thehousehold of origin as part of an insurance exercise in theface of economic uncertainty. Remittances are also found tobe driven by a migrant's labor market earnings level. The paper highlights the important role of remittances inproviding an effective means of risk-coping and mutualsupport within the family.
