【 摘 要 】

The 'Quality of Education inMadrasah' (QEM) study aimed to provide high qualityresearch into various dimensions of quality of education inIndonesian Madrasahs. The study focused on final yearstudents in Islamic Junior Secondary Schools (MadrasahTsanawiyah, MT). One hundred and fifty MTs were sampled fromacross Indonesia, with equal numbers selected from Java andthe East and West of the country. Systematically selectedintact classes were sampled within schools, involving atotal of 6,233 students. Eight instruments were developedfor use in the study. Four were achievement tests designedto assess performance in Mathematics, Science, Indonesianand English. Australian Council for EducationalResearch's (ACER's) School Life Questionnaire(SLQ) was used as an affective measure of school quality.ACER developed an instrument to assess student backgroundcharacteristics, and a Principal Interview Schedule and aSchool Inventory were also developed by ACER to collectinformation on MTs. Mean scores showed that students in Javaperformed better than students in the East and West regionson each of the four achievement tests, with students in theWest performing marginally better than students in the Easton all tests. The largest correlations between studentbackground factors and achievement across the three regionswere observed for number of home resources and studymaterials available to students.
