The Government of Peru is committed toimproving rural electrification coverage, aiming to increaserural coverage from an estimated 55 percent at the end of2010 to 88 percent by 2020. To achieve this goal, theDirectorate General of Rural Electrification (DGER) of theMinistry of Energy and Mines (MEM) has been implementing andexecuting the National Plan for Rural Electrification,prepared annually, based on the 2006 Rural ElectrificationLaw, to extend service and attract participation of thepopulation, local governments and electricity distributioncompanies. Within this program, the World Bank (WB) andGlobal Environmental Facility (GEF) are supporting theDirectorate of Competitive Funds (DFC) of the DGER in theimplementation and execution of the Rural Electrification(RE) Project, initiated in July 2006 and the Second RuralElectrification Project initiated in July 2011, to assistelectricity distribution companies to implement ruralelectrification. Among the activities underway in the firstRE Project is the implementation of a pilot program todevelop the productive use of electricity, promotingopportunities for income generation in rural areas. Thisreport provides an early assessment of the productive usesof electricity in Peru under the RE Project.
