Although a number of m-money businesseshave emerged around the world, few have reached significantscale. Overall, m-money uptake is limited when contrastedwith its apparent promises of reaching the unbanked andunderserved, of servicing existing banking clients, and ofbeing a means for a cashless society. This study examinesthe following in more detail: existing major money flows andthe critical mass of low-value, high-volume paymenttransactions and whether m-money can be used for them (i.e.,potential demand); regulatory environment and majorobstacles for m-money uptake; business models of partneringinstitutions; payment behavior of users and nonusers (bankedand unbanked), in particular where they receive funds andhow they use money, including alternative means; andexisting and potential agentsnetworks, their requirementsto run m-money as a viable business, and their trainingneeds. This report provides detailed information regardingthe five main topics as they relate to Brazil, businessmodels, money flows and demand, potential user perceptionsand behavior, regulation, and agent networks.
