【 摘 要 】
This paper explores heterogeneity insoil quality, lack of knowledge, and autonomy asexplanations for the low adoption of improved agriculturalpractices. The paper uses data from a randomized fieldexperiment that combined localized soil analyses, tailoredinput recommendations, extension services, and an in-kindgrant. The analysis finds that while neither the degree ofrecommendation specificity (plot versus cluster level) northe extent of autonomy (defined as the freedom of choice inspending the in-kind grant) had any effect on adoptionduring the intervention, farmers with autonomy hadsubstantially higher adoption of improved practices twoyears after the intervention ended.
