This report starts by presenting theinternational and Italian context of internationalremittance flows in the past decade, as a general frameworkof the study (chapter two). The connection between the labormarket integration of migrants with the more generaleconomic trends in their destination countries is a crucialissue in the current academic and political debate. Trendsand impacts of the economic crisis reflect themselves inmicro-behaviors and affect also the transnational activitiesof migrants. Chapter three presents the objectives of theresearch and the related survey design and samplingtechniques for the fieldwork, while a specificmethodological note is added at the end of the report on thefieldwork phase. Chapter four focuses on empirical findingsfrom the analysis of the 480 interviews collected. After abrief description of demographic and economic conditions ofinterviewed migrants, the core of this section is devoted tothe analysis of migrants’ attitudes and behaviors in sendingremittances, in engaging in investments and savings, and toexplore changes across time and according to theiroccupational status at destination. In light of the globalcommitment to the reduction of remittance costs as a part ofa more comprehensive strategy to foster the migration anddevelopment nexus, a specific section deals with remittanceservice providers and remittance costs revealing still roomfor improvement for the development of a competitive andtransparent remittance market. The conclusive chapterhighlights the main empirical findings and suggests furtherlines of analysis on migratory models, migrant economicintegration and transnationalism from the collectedempirical evidence.
