Although geothermal energy is globallyrecognized as a clean and reliable source of heat andelectric power its development can inadvertently lead toadverse outcomes that disproportionately disadvantage women.Based on good practices and lessons learned, this reportintroduces ways that geothermal projects can mitigate risksand pursue opportunities to address gender gaps within theproject cycle. It outlines the risks and opportunitiesassociated with (i) changes in land and natural resourceuse, (ii) changes to employment and economic patterns, and(iii) changes to environment and health. Beyond mappingrisks and opportunities, the report makes the case forfocusing on the gaps between men and women from the projectoutset. Once gaps, key stakeholder risks, and additionaldevelopment opportunities have been identified, projectteams have an opportunity to address them through actions. The report provides guidance on how to include specificmonitoring and evaluation indicators in the resultsframework for geothermal projects that measure progresstoward closing gaps between men and women. In addition, thereport contains an overview of guidance and toolkitsdeveloped, selected global case studies, and other resourcesso that project teams, governments, and geothermaldevelopers have additional guidance on hand to prepare moreequitable projects.
