In recent years, International FinanceCorporation (IFC) has become increasingly active in theprivate health sector in developing countries. We are nowthe largest multi-lateral investor in the private healthsector, worldwide. Since 2000 the author have provided overUS$1.5 billion of financial support (mainly through debt andequity financing) to over 80 projects in more than 30countries. This support has enabled some $4 billion ofinvestment in the private health sector. Health careorganizations supported by IFC provide employment for around35,000 people and treat 5.5 million patients annually. Aboutone third of our clients are based in IDA countries (mainlypoorer developing countries). And about one fifth of ourclients have achieved some form of internationallyrecognized accreditation. This guide is intended to assistIFC staff to undertake an on-site assessment of the qualityof care and safety of the hospital environment. The guidecomplements the commercial due diligence (which covers, forexample, business, financial, legal and insurance issues).Some essential aspects of Facility Safety (e.g. fireprecautions etc.) are covered; however, the guide does notreplace IFC’s separate environmental, life and fire safety assessment.
