The paper summarizes key designcharacteristics and performance indicators of national andcivil service pension schemes in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).It is intended to serve as a resource in pension reformefforts in the region. The note delivers an up-to dateassessment of the main design parameters, key performancemetrics, and main challenges facing pension systems in SSA.The information provided in the note aims to capture currenttrends in the region and benchmark performance and pensionsystem design choices made by countries againstinternational experience. Section one provides an overviewof mandatory national pension systems in the region whereasSection two presents the key design features of civilservice pension schemes. Section three analyzes theperformance of both national and civil service pensionschemes; particular attention is paid to the fiscalperformance and equity of the pension schemes. Pensionsystem design parameters of both national and civil servicepension schemes are discussed in section four. Section fiveaims to enhance the paper by providing relevant demographicdata and analysis.
