School health and nutrition (SHN)programs are critical for achieving education for all (EFA)as research has shown that improvements in health statuscontribute to improvements in learning and academicoutcomes. Through programs targeted to address major healthconditions that are highly prevalent among poorschoolchildren, (for example, iron deficiency anemia, hunger, worm infections, diarrheal disease, and malaria) SHNprograms can have a large impact on children’s education, increasing the time that they spend at school and theirability to learn while at school. SHN programs arerecognized as important educational policy initiatives toimprove education outcomes. Furthermore, schools provide anexcellent platform for the delivery of child health andnutrition services, where they can strengthen thecost-effectiveness of health interventions and deliver gainsin participation and learning. In this paper, the policyplatform is documented as well as the type, coverage, andthe effect of the SHN interventions, followed by the keyareas identified for development and learning of the schoolhealth promotion program (SHPP).
