【 摘 要 】
This study analyzes whether subjectivewell-being measures can explain variation in peacefuluprisings, in addition to the objective measures typicallyused in analyses of this type of events. Using data onuprisings and subjective well-being for 118 countries from2007 to 2014 -- a period during which nonviolent conflictbecame increasingly prevalent -- the study finds evidence ofa positive effect of life dissatisfaction on the incidenceof peaceful uprising, but not its violent counterpart. Thiseffect does not depend on the type of political regime, northe stage of development, and, to a large extent, itreflects changes in perceived satisfaction with livingstandards and the ability to have a purposeful andmeaningful life.
