【 摘 要 】
This paper assesses the relation betweenaccess to markets and cultivated land in Sub-Saharan Africa.Making use of a geo-referenced panel over three decades(1970-2005) during which the road network was significantlyimproved, the analysis finds a modest but significantpositive association between increased market accessibilityand local cropland expansion. It also finds that croplandexpansion, in turn, is associated with a small butsignificant increase in local gross domestic product. Theseresults are suggestive of agricultural activities thatdevelop at the extensive margin, which are mostly to servelocal demand, but are not indicative of commercialagriculture that serves external markets.
