This report reviews and recommendsstrategies to regulate the trade of wildlife throughUlaanbaatar, Mongolia. Ulaanbaatar is an ideal site tolaunch an effort to support improved enforcement of wildlifetrade regulations. The city is the seat of Mongolia'sgovernment, media markets, and civil society, as well as thecenter of the wildlife trade. Some of the country'slargest raw materials markets are located to the east andwest of the city. Ulaanbaatar's many road inspectionpoints, its train station, and its airport are all strategicsites for enforcing trade regulation. Responsibility forenforcement of wildlife trade regulations is distributedamong half a dozen different agencies. This report focusesspecifically on Mongolia's existing legal framework forcontrolling the wildlife trade, and on strategies forimproving enforcement, particularly in Ulaanbaatar. Beforeturning to those subjects, the next section provides a briefoverview of the Mongolian wildlife trade.
