【 摘 要 】
Working with the Mexican Ministry ofEducation, this study piloted a scalable program to reducehigh school dropout rates by focusing on socio-emotionalskill development and mathematics tutoring. The interventionwas evaluated through a randomized field experiment withmore than 5,000 youths at 20 upper secondary schools inMexico City. An intention-to-treat analysis finds someevidence that exposure to the Opportunities and Developmentto Avoid Risks Program increases socio-emotional skills, butno evidence that it improves math outcomes or futureattendance. Likely explanations for these 0 results includelow take-up and other process factors, which are documentqualitatively, as well as heterogeneous treatment effects. In particular, an inverse-probability-weighted matchingmodel is suggestive of an effect whereby some studentsparticipate actively in the program and drop out of schoolless often, while other students choose not to participatewhen given the option and actually drop out more as a result.
