【 摘 要 】

Labor market discrimination is verydifficult to pinpoint, even more difficult to measure andalmost impossible to “prove”. It has been studied in manydisciplines of which economics and sociology are prime. Thelatter has focused more on the manner in whichdiscrimination plays out and how it is related to differentforms of social stratification. This paper reviews theliterature and makes two main contributions: first, itbuilds a four-fold typology to think aboutdiscrimination—overt or covert; conscious or unconscious;legal or illegal and real or perceived. Second, itidentifies screens and filters—devices through whichdiscrimination plays out in the labor market. Unless moreempirical studies identify the play of discrimination andexclusion, subordinate groups may well be told thatdiscrimination is actually in their heads—that they areimagining it.
