【 摘 要 】
Social distancing requirementsassociated with COVID-19 have led to school closures. InApril, 192 countries had closed all schools anduniversities, affecting more than 90 percent of theworld's learners: over 1.5 billion children and youngpeople. Closures are expected to reduce schooling and leadto future losses in earnings. Starting from the assumptionthat every additional year of schooling translates to 8percent in future earnings, this paper estimates andconfirms the loss in marginal future earnings on the basisof a four-month shutdown. The authors also estimated thelosses by level of education. The findings show that theschool closures reduce future earnings. It is also likelythat students from low-income countries will be affectedmost, where the earning losses will be devastating. Theseestimates are conservative, assuming closures end after fourmonths, with schools re-opening in the new academic year, and that school quality will not suffer.
