This Kenya urbanization review takes adeep look at Kenya’s urbanization process. It providesinitial policy options in several key areas includinghousing and basic services, land use and transport,planning, subnational finance, and local economicdevelopment. These are not the only areas of concern forKenya’s urban practitioners and policy makers. But they wereidentified as areas for more in-depth study during initialstakeholder consultations and as key priorities inconsultations with government experts. It is hoped that theReview will serve to raise understanding of the importantopportunity that urbanization presents for the country,informing policy makers and interested parties alike andexpanding dialogue on Kenya’s urbanization. The review islaid out in three parts. The first looks at some of thedemographic, economic, and spatial trends of Kenya’s urbanareas (chapter one). The second describes the challenges orthreats to a smooth urban transition: large, growinginformality and inequality within and between urban areas,in three categories of access (chapters two, three, andfour). The third examines the modern institutions needed toaddress the challenges head on and to ensure that Kenya’scities have the opportunity to serve as true drivers ofeconomic growth (chapters five, six, and seven).
