This report is an inaugural issue in anew series that aims to offer a fresh look at how developingcountries are overcoming persistent problems in publicsector management. Significant improvements in public sectorperformance are being evidenced across the developing worldtoday, as government officials and political leaders findnew and innovative ways to tackle long-standing challenges.Part I of this report demonstrates that public sectorperformance is being pursued diligently and successfullyacross a variety of country contexts, including inlow-income environments. Through surveying its governancespecialists from around the globe, the World Bank hasassembled a collection of 15 cases that showcase how lessonsfrom global experience are being adapted and applied inpractice. The report also explores common success driversthat appear in each of the cases. Part II focuses on aspecial, cross-cutting topic that is critical to publicsector performance -- policy and inter-agency coordination.As the responsibilities of government have grown in volumeand complexity, policy and program coordination has becomeever more challenging, and the stakes have never beenhigher. Enhancing coordination will depend not only on theadopted formal institutional mechanisms, but also on theirinterplay with the broader institutional environment andwith other processes that influence coordination.
