Mali, Chad, Niger and Guinea have someof the lowest rates of secondary school completion in theworld for girls. They also have some of the highest rates ofchild marriage and early childbearing. While some othercountries in West and Central Africa are making rapidprogress toward better educational attainment for girls andfewer child marriages, progress is uneven across the fourfocal countries. Among them, Guinea has achieved the largestgains over the last few decades, but progress in Chad, Mali,and Niger has been slow and in some cases inexistent. Childmarriage, early childbearing, and low educational attainmenthinder girls’ empowerment. This Note documents trends inthese areas over time as well as their impact on otherdevelopment outcomes and economic costs. Finally, policiesand programs that could improve outcomes for adolescentgirls are discussed.
