Education policy makers around the worldmarvel at Vietnam’s success in access to general educationand learning outcomes. Despite the country’s relatively lowlevel of economic development, Vietnamese studentsoutperform students in Organization for EconomicCo-operation and Development (OECD) countries on average inthe program for international student assessment. What arethe factors that have allowed Vietnam to achieve suchsuccess? This note shows that Vietnam’s education systemshares common characteristics with other successfuleducation systems in East Asia. While some of these factorsare sociocultural - which may not be easily replicable inother countries - others are policy decisions from whichleaders of other countries may learn. Following theevolution of education in postwar Vietnam, from 1975 to thepresent, this note highlights the key reforms pursued by thegovernment and the resulting achievements, as well as theobstacles encountered along the way. The note also discusseschallenges that Vietnam’s education system faces today inreaching its full potential as a knowledge-based economy.
