Geographically, Chongqing isstrategically positioned as a gateway to China’s west, a keyconnection in the Yangtze river economic belt, and astrategic base for China’s belt and road initiative. Overthe past two decades, Chongqing has faced significantchallenges, including the resettlement of over 1 millionpeople and numerous enterprises due to the construction ofthe Three Gorges dam. Despite these challenges, Chongqinghas made an extraordinary transformation. Thistransformation has resulted in an important sectoral shift.The municipality’s economy, formerly based in agricultureand heavy industry, is now more balanced, with the secondaryand tertiary industries contributing to 44 percent and 48percent of gross domestic product (GDP) respectively.Chongqing’s economic transformation goes hand in hand withimprovements to social inclusiveness.
