Poverty reduction is one of the threekey objectives of the Afghanistan national developmentstrategy. The poverty profile is an important element in theinformation kit of the policymaker that helps focus policyto attain this objective. A poverty profile is standardmethodology to describe the extent and nature of poverty ina country or region. It assesses the magnitude of povertyand its distribution across geographic and socioeconomicdomains, provides information on the characteristics of thepoor, illustrates the heterogeneity among the poor, andidentifies correlates of poverty. The report describes themultidimensional nature of poverty by encompassing thenonmonetary dimensions of poverty, particularly educationand health status, and vulnerability to shocks. Tables inthe report are also disaggregated by region, income sources, gender, and many socioeconomic characteristics. In additionto providing a picture of the many dimensions of poverty, itis important to also recognize that the poverty estimates inthis report are the first nationally representative, seasonally smoothed estimates of wellbeing for Afghanistan.Because previously no such existing estimates wereavailable, the provision of these estimates in this reportis new analysis that substantially fills key knowledge gapsin our understanding of the poverty situation in Afghanistan.
