Roma women are one of the most deprivedgroups in Europe, as they suffer a double layer ofexclusion: as women, and as members of Europe´s largestethnic minority. Although there are no reliable data on theRoma population in the Western Balkans, available estimatessuggest that the share of national populations representedby Roma ranges between 1.7 percent in Bosnia and Herzegovinaand 9.6 percent in North Macedonia. This report is intended to be a concise and timelysummary that highlights the key aspects of gender equalityamong marginalized Roma communities in the Western Balkans.The goal of the report is to strengthen the knowledge baseand evidence to understand the key determinants of gendergaps among the Roma population. For that the report offers asummary diagnostic of the most important barriers thatfemale Roma face, in particular, accessing education andemployment; further, it explores the ways in which Romawomen’s employment and educational outcomes are constrainedabove and beyond the constraints faced by Roma males.
