Around the world, countries use a widevariety of poverty measurement methodologies. A commonmethod used to measure poverty is based on levels ofconsumption - a person is considered poor if his or herconsumption level falls below some minimum level necessaryto meet basic needs. This note therefore aims at brieflylaying out the methodological framework of measuring povertyin the Maldives using a relative poverty line and presentsfindings of applying the poverty concepts in the context ofthe Maldives. For the purpose of this note, poverty is thepronounced deprivation in well-being defined as whetherhouseholds or individuals have enough resources or abilitiesto meet their needs. Poverty is also multidimensional innature and can include low incomes and the inability toacquire the basic goods and services necessary for survivalwith dignity but also low levels of health and education,poor access to clean water and sanitation, inadequatephysical security, lack of voice, and insufficient capacityand opportunity to better one’s life.
