South Caucasus - Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia : Private Enterprises in the Forest Sector - A Survey of the Private Sector in Wood Productionand Processing
In all three countries of the SouthCaucasus region - Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia forestsare a key natural resource and source of wealth for thenation and the global community. Different resourceendowments have created variation in wood utilizationpatterns across the countries. While fuelwood productionremains by far the most common type of forest use in allthree countries, production forestry and wood processingdiffer. This study aimed to generate regional knowledge onthe private sector’s role in the forest sector and toenhance opportunities for public-private collaboration toimprove forest-based job creation and economic development.In the medium to long-term, this knowledge is expected toinform the countries, the World Bank, and other developmentpartners when they develop interventions and policies thathelp to exploit forest resources sustainably for nationaldevelopment. The report focuses on wood production,harvesting, and processing but not on other forest-baseddirect and indirect economic activities such as tourism.
