【 摘 要 】
The effect of macroeconomic crises onchild health is a topic of great policy importance. Thisarticle analyzes the impact of a profound crisis in Peru oninfant mortality. It finds an increase of about 2.5percentage points in the infant mortality rate for childrenborn during the crisis of the late 1980s, which implies thatabout 17,000 more children died than would have in theabsence of the crisis. Accounting for the precise source ofthe increase in infant mortality is difficult, but itappears that the collapse in public and private expenditureson health played an important role.
