【 摘 要 】
Access to safe sanitation prevents thespread of bacteria and viruses that cause illnesses such asdiarrhea, a leading cause of child mortality and acontributor to stunting in children. Without access to ahygienic toilet, and the motivation to use one, peopleusually defecate in the open, and fecal matter makes its wayinto homes, food, and drinking water sources. In places suchas rural India where open defecation is very common, findingeffective and affordable approaches to increase sanitationcoverage is a major public health challenge.
