The study in Togo reveals thatpsychology-based entrepreneur training (personal initiativetraining) increases firm profits by 30 percent, compared toa statistically insignificant increase for traditionalbusiness training. Personal initiative training wasparticularly effective for female-owned businesses, who sawtheir profits increase by 40 percent, compared to no impactfrom traditional business training. Getting more women intotraditionally male-dominated sectors of the economy couldboost the incomes of women entrepreneurs and theirhouseholds. Our study in Ethiopia revealed that firms ownedby women who cross over into male-dominated sectors are twotimes more profitable than firms owned by women who remainin traditionally female sectors, and they are just asprofitable as businesses owned by men. Women are more likelyto cross-over when parents and husbands support them andwhen they have access to information on the higher earningspotential in male-dominated sectors.
