This review of the empirical literatureshows that industries with more intense domestic competitionwill export more. Competition law enforcement can be tracedto export performance and is complementary to trade reforms.Pro-competition market regulation that reduces restrictionsand promotes competition, where it is viable, is animportant determinant for trade. The elimination of barriersto entry and rivalry, and a level playing field in upstreamsectors contributes to export competitiveness in downstreammanufacturing sectors. In some sectors, effectivecompetition policy can directly lower trade costs.
