This note is a summary of a report thatconsiders urban areas as the complement to rural areas thatwill allow the Plurinational State of Bolivia to achieve thegoals set forth in its Patriotic Agenda for the Bicentennial2025. The report uses data available at the national levelfrom censuses and household surveys from the NationalStatistics Institute (INE) and the Social and EconomicPolicy Analysis Unit of the Ministry of Development Planning(UDAPE) to provide a first approximation to: (i) identifyopportunities that urban areas present to achieve theobjectives of the Patriotic Agenda regarding the reductionof poverty and universal coverage of basic services; (ii)understand and overcome the challenges that the expansion ofurban areas present, and understand the growth dynamics ofdifferent types of cities; (iii) review the institutionalframework and planning tools currently available for urbandevelopment; and (iv) provide suggestions for futureanalysis. However, due to limitations of the available data,the report does not include an economic analysis of urbanareas nor an in-depth analysis of issues at city level. Itis expected that the results of the report can inform theprojects that the Government of Bolivia is developing andimplementing in cooperation with the World Bank and otherpartners, such as improving national data, urban labormarkets, poverty and informality, and investment forinfrastructure in cities.
