NETL continued its exceptional success in its environment, safety, and health programs throughout 2008. Most notably, substantial progress was made to ensure that the Albany site is fully integrated with NETL's environmental strategy. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Albany, Morgantown, and Pittsburgh operations all maintained ISO 14001 certification. Also, the Morgantown and Pittsburgh operations maintained OHSAS 18001 certification, while the Albany site became certified to ISO 9001. With its environmental management framework in place, NETL takes a tandem approach to planning and managing its activities in an effort to minimize its environmental impacts. Some activities require continuous management and monitoring for the foreseeable future, while other activities can be completed in a single effort. Those activities requiring continuous management are monitored through environment, safety, and health programs. Those specific activities that require a concentrated effort are managed using environmental management plans (EMP's). In addition to the success of the environmental management system, another highlight in 2008 was that there were no environmental violations cited. Furthermore, the comprehensive and thorough approach to environmental compliance implemented at NETL uncovered no issues of noncompliance, and NETL was in full compliance with all applicable environmental Executive Orders.
