The study on "Public participation in water management in the co-ordination area Havel (Berlin-Brandenburg)" authored by Nicole Kranz, Antje Vorwerk and Wenke Hansen was published as the first volume of the new publication series of the KompetenzZentrum Wasser Berlin (KWB - Berlin Centre of Competence for Water). The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) introduces a integrative and interdisciplinary approach to river basin management to ensure the protection of water resources across Europe. Article 14 of the WFD specifically stipulates that public participation is a key tool for ensuring the effective management of river basins through the involvement of relevant stakeholders in decision-making processes. In this sense, public participation not only refers to information and consultation but requires the active involvement of the interested public as well. The report provides an overview and analysis of the current situation with regard to public participation in water management in the co-ordination area Havel, which forms part of the Elbe river basin, focusing on the German Länder Brandenburg and Berlin. The book can be ordered at: KompetenzZentrum Wasser Berlin gGmbH, Cicerostr. 24, 10709 Berlin and is available [pdf, 480 KB, German] for download.
