Let N be a normal subgroup of the group G. By a result of P. Hall, G is nilpotent if N and G/N' are nilpotent. We are looking for group classes C and characteristic subgroups f (N) of N such that the statement above, with (belongs to C. f (N)) substituted for (is nilpotent, N'), remains true.
