For each n >= 2, we construct a ring R such that the matrix ring M-n(R) is clean and M-k(R) is not clean for k < n. This answers in negative the question posed by Han and Nicholson [11] whether the clean property is Morita invariant. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
