【 摘 要 】
In the mid-nineteenth century, mountain sanatoriums became specialized centres in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Following this European trend, some Portuguese doctors and public figures put efforts into building a mountain sanatorium. The place chosen was the Serra da Estrela, the highest point in mainland Portugal, for its climatic conditions, geographical setting, humidity and lack of social activity. Several experiments were undertaken with patients, who voluntarily settled in the mountains, considered the Portuguese Switzerland, seeking to overcome the malady of the century. In the village of Poio Negro, a weather station was installed and several cabins were built to house the first patients, but a variety of difficulties diverted attention to the city of Guarda. This article aims to identify the doctrines underlying medical treatment for life in the mountains and the medical reasons behind the need to build a sanatorium in the Serra da Estrela. We also intend to make a retrospective summary of the first therapeutic experiences in the mountain landscape until the construction of the first sanatorium. The research is based on documentation such as medical theses, medical articles and some reference monographs.
