【 摘 要 】

In the imperial period, Aelius Aristides visited the Egyptian Ethiopian border, that the novelists Xenophon and Heliodorus, as well as the biographer Philostratus, featured as an important crossing in their works. The first cataract was actually the natural border, but not the political border of the Roman Empire. Besides, it is depicted as an open space, as a trade area between continents rather than as a barrier. Greeks, Romans and Ethiopians met there. Through these authors we perceive the complex reality of the Dodecaschoenus and above all the way the Greeks showed themselves through the portrayal of idealized Ethiopian people.
