【 摘 要 】

The article aims at synthesizing political, economic and human aspects of the Mediterranean Maghreb space since its independance. It argues that it forms a politically heterogeneous but culturally coherent space, with ancient but stable borders, but the attempts to institutionally unify it fail because of opposing perceptions of local political identities, national interests and power and influence strategies. The Arab uprisings that took place in 2011 now ask the question of its political and identity (re)definition, it’s geopolitical (re)composition and it’s institutional (re)construction.
