【 摘 要 】
The present article intends to analyse the rhetoric strategy utilized by the members of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro to promote of a political project that aimed at the construct of a one and undivided national identity. The funerals that used to occur during the anniversary of the Institute were situations where speeches filled with emotion were utilized to articulate this political project with the regional conflicts that were ravaging the Empire in the 1840s. Therefore, apprehending rhetoric as a key of reading we can observe of the multiple ways of touching the audience were utilized, this article focus on how tears and words were used to induce a collective cry reinforcing the identity ties among Brazilians that were present at the "Festa Literaria" and the readers of the IHGB's Magazine in the different provinces of the empire.
