【 摘 要 】

The transfer of the Lusitanians to America brought with them an enormous administrative apparatus that would mark the colonial scene deeply. Governors, Vice-kings, ombudsmen, suppliers, in short, a wealth of positions that not only had the function of exercising royal control, but in the same way bureaucratized the colonial day-to-day. In addition, such officials sometimes took advantage of their positions to gain personal benefits, creating a large gap of dissatisfaction between overseas subjects and royal officials. From this perspective, the present article aims to analyze an exemplary case that meets the characteristics mentioned above: Salvador Correia de Sá Benavides. In analyzing the trajectory of this royal shadow we can demean some profiles and mechanisms of actions of those men who, theoretically, crossed the Atlantic for the maintenance of the monarch's power in the farthest lands of the Portuguese overseas empire.
