【 摘 要 】

Cemetery is the place where we buried our dead, and the negative environmental impacts that these necropolises can cause are generated by their pollutants, such as heavy metals, chemicals related to the preservation of the corpse during the burial ritual, and the necro-leachate, which is the liquid resulting from the latent phase of putrefaction that has high content of pathogenicity, since it has in its composition bacteria and viruses that cause diseases if ingested. These components adversely impact the environment and are harmful to human health, as they can be leached into groundwater used for public supply. The National Environmental Policy highlights the importance of Environmental Impact Studies in cemeteries since 1981, and CONAMA resolutions regulate the operation of necropolis and its practices, focusing on the mitigation of pollutants, seeking to make local cemeteries of ecological balance. In order to mitigate negative environmental impacts, there are also less impactful options such as coffins and mortuaries made of biodegradable material and organ donation, which reduce the pollutants released into the environment.
