【 摘 要 】
Detection of bacteria that cause acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) is important both for the appropriate antibiotic therapy of the patients and prophylaxis if necessary. In order to examine the value of broth enrichment culture which is not commonly used in clinical microbiology laboratories in our country, we used thioglycollate medium in addition to chocolate and blood agar media for 338 Cerebrospinal-Fluid (CSF) specimens obtained from children admitted to Hacettepe University Ihsan Do¤ramac› Children’s Hospital. Bacterial growth was evaluated together with other routine microbiologic parameters and clinical state of the patients. In eight of the 40 significant growths there were discreapancies between the liquid and solid media. Four H. Influenzae strains were detected by agar media, 2 S. pneumoniae and 2 alpha-hemolytic streptococci could only be detecter in the enrichment broth. When the additional cost of broth medium usage is compared with the cost of empiric antibiotics used in the therapy of ABM, it is observed that the cost of antibiotic therapy is significantly low in if the antibiotics are prescribed according to the results of the antibiotic susceptibility tests. It is concluded that broth enrichment cultures should be used in clinical microbiology laboratories for cultivation of CSF specimens in addition to blood and chocolate agar media.
