Polaroid in Südafrika. Eine Bild- und Konfliktgeschichte aus der Apartheid-Ära

Since the end of the 1960s, the US photography company Polaroid, known for its instant cameras and films, supplied South Africa with cameras that could be used for the efficient production of identity documents for the black population. This triggered protests by black employees (Polaroid Revolutionary Workers Movement, PRWM), especially at the company headquarters in Massachusetts. The case study examines some pamphlets and leaflets that used elaborate manipulations of photographs and an evocative visual language. The movement harnessed the medium of photography to rise up against the instant photography giant in order to beat it at its own game. The dispute over US trade with South Africa reached the House of Representatives. An exploration of the history of images and conflict also makes it possible to take a broader look at the genesis and the concrete historical situation of the ID-based control mechanisms in the apartheid state of South Africa. The actual use of Polaroid technology for surveillance purposes cannot be clearly established, and the protest was successful insofar as the company stopped its deliveries to South Africa at the end of the 1970s.* * *Seit dem Ende der 1960er-Jahre lieferte der für seine Sofortbildkameras und -filme bekannte US-amerikanische Fotografiehersteller Polaroid Apparate nach Südafrika, die zur effizienten Erstellung von Ausweisdokumenten für die schwarze Bevölkerung dienen konnten. Besonders in der Firmenzentrale in Massachusetts löste dies den Protest schwarzer Mitarbeiter/innen aus (Polaroid Revolutionary Workers Movement, PRWM). Die Fallstudie untersucht einige Pamphlete und Flugblätter, die sich elaborierter Manipulationen von Fotografien und einer aufrüttelnden Bildsprache bedienten. Die Bewegung setzte das Medium Fotografie gegen den Sofortbildhersteller ein, um diesen mit seinen eigenen Waffen zu schlagen. Der Streit um den US-amerikanischen Handel mit Südafrika gelangte bis ins Repräsentantenhaus. Die Darstellung der Bild- und Konfliktgeschichte ermöglicht es zugleich, einen breiteren Blick auf die Genese und die konkrete historische Situation der ausweisbasierten Kontrollmechanismen im Apartheidstaat Südafrika zu richten. Der tatsächliche Einsatz der Polaroid-Technik für Überwachungszwecke lässt sich nicht eindeutig ermitteln, und der Protest hatte insofern Erfolg, als das Unternehmen seine Lieferungen nach Südafrika Ende der 1970er-Jahre stoppte.
