【 摘 要 】

This paper aims to comprehend the learning and development process of competencies in engineering education through an active pedagogy. Competencies were assumed as a set of capacities: knowing how to do - linked to technical skills; knowing how to think – link to technical knowledge and cognitive skills; knowing how to be and to act – linked to attitudes; these incorporated in the learning process. Mainly, this study is based in John Dewey’s active learning theory, as in the use of the Problem Based Learning approach. This is an analytical research that sought to verify links of an active approach to the promotion and construction of transversal competencies, that is, knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for the contemporary engineer.
