Determinants of Dental Health Behaviors of Iranian Students Based on the Health Belief Model (HBM)

【 摘 要 】

Background:Severalfactorsaffectoralanddentalhygieneandthereforegeneralhealth.Objectives:Thisstudyusedthehealthbeliefmodel(HBM)toexplorefactorsinfluencingdentalhealthbehaviorsofstudentsinTeheran,Iran.Methods:Across-sectionalstudydesignwasused.Theparticipantswere400malehigh-schoolstudentsindistrict5inTehranselectedthroughmultistagestratifiedrandomsampling.Aself-administeredquestionnairewasusedtocollectthedata,whichincludedthefollowingmeasuresoftheHBM:perceivedseverity,perceivedsusceptibility,perceivedbenefits,perceivedbarriers,cuestoaction,andself-efficacy.AmultipleregressionanalysisandPearson’scorrelationwereruntodetectpotentialcorrelationsbetweentheindependentvariablesanddependentvariable.Results:All400studentscompletedthestudy.Theresultsofthelinearregressionanalysisshowedthatperceivedbarriers,self-efficacy,andcuestoactionaccountedforthehighestpercentoftotalvarianceobservedindentalhealthbehaviors.ThetotalHBMconstructsanddemographicvariablesexplained29%ofthevarianceindentalhealthbehaviors.Conclusions:Thecurrentstudyprovidesevidencethatoralanddentalhygienecanbepromotedbyreducingperceivedbarriersandenhancingoralanddentalhygieneself-efficacy.
