Workplace Violence Against Medical Students in Shiraz, Iran

【 摘 要 】

Background:Violentbehaviorintheworkplace,orworkplaceviolence(WPV),isconsideredaseriousthreattothementalandphysicalhealthofemployees.WPVrangesfromverbalabusetophysicalassaultsandevensexualharassment.Objectives:Everymedicalstudentmayberepeatedlyexposedtoviolenceinhospitalsduetodirectcontactwiththepublicandpatients.ThisstudyinvestigatestheprevalenceofalltypesofWPVagainstmedicalstudents.PatientsandMethods:Aretrospective,cross-sectionalstudywasconductedon275medicalstudentsintheeducationalhospitalsofShirazUniversityofMedicalSciences.ThesurveyquestionnaireusedwasamodifiedversionofaWPVquestionnairetranslatedintoPersian.Thequestionnairecontaineddemographicinformationandtypesofviolenceexperiencedincludingphysicalviolence,verbalviolenceandsexualharassment.Standarddescriptivestatisticswereusedtoreportthefrequencyofevents.TheassociationsbetweencategoricalvariableswereanalyzedusingtheChi-squaretest.Results:Of193respondents,24.9%reportedexperiencingphysicalviolence,85.5%reportedbeingverballythreatenedand26.1%reportedbeingsexuallyharassed.Malesweremorelikelytobeexposedtophysicalviolenceandfemalestosexualharassment.Patients’relativeswerethemostfrequentperpetratorsofphysicalandverbalviolencewhilephysiciancolleagueswerethemainsourceofsexualharassmentConclusions:Astheemotionallystimulatedcompanionsofpatientswerefoundtobethemostfrequentperpetratorsofphysicalandverbalviolence,providingspecialtrainingformedicalstudentsonhowtodealwithsuchincidents,increasingthenumberofnurserypersonnelandincreasingthequantityandqualityofhospitalguardsisnecessarytominimizetheprevalenceofviolenceagainstmedicalstudents.
