Parenting Styles and Psychopathology: The Importance of Grandparents

【 摘 要 】

Background:Controversyexistsregardingtheroleplayedbyparent-childrenrelationshipsforchildren’sbehavioralandpsychosocialdevelopment.Crucialforsomeauthors,othersconsiderparentingstylesaspartofamorecomplexsystem.Lessadaptiveparentingstylesaregenerallyassociatedwithchildrenwhohavelowerinvolvementatschoolandmaycontributeforpsychopathologyemergence.Objectives:Toinvestigatethecontributionofparentingstylesfortheexplanationofchildpsychopathology.Hypothesis:Parentingstyles(H1)andparents’childhoodmemoriesregardingparentingstyles(H2)docontributesignificantlyfortheexplanationofstatisticalvarianceofchildren’spsychopathology.Method:Participants:110children(67boys,43girls)aged7-11years(M=9.22,SD=1.14)fromschoolsinPortugalaswellas83fathersand86mothers;Instruments:Forparentingstyles,thePortugueseversionofEMBUmemoriesofupbringing(forparentsregardingtheirownparents),EMBU-P(forparents)andEMBU-C(forchildren)wereused.Toassesschildren’spsychopathologythePortugueseversionofCBCLwasused.Results:Accordingtolinearregressions,individualandfamilyfactorsdocontributesignificantlyfortheexplanationofallCBCL’sindexes.EMBU-Cregardingmothers’parentingstylesonlyexplainstheHyperactivity/Attentionindex.EMBU-PexplainsmostofCBCL’sindexes.Mothers’andFathers’EMBUMemoriesofUpbringingexplainstheoverallCBCL’sindexes.Conclusions:Theexplanationofchildren’spsychopathologybyparentingstylesisnotrestrictedtoparents’representationsregardingtheirownparentingstylesnortochildren’sperceptionsregardingparentingstylesbutextendstomemoriesofparentsregardingparentingstylesusedbytheirownparents.TheabilityofEMBUMemoriesofUpbringingtoexplainchildren’spsychopathologyseemstoexceedtheEMBU-P’sandEMBU-C’scapacity.
