Physician Labor Participation and Unemployment Rate in Iran

【 摘 要 】

Background:Thebehaviorofphysiciansaftergraduatingfromuniversitiesisveryimportantforpolicymakers.Theywanttofollowthesebehaviorstofindwhathappenedtophysiciansaftergraduation.Increasinginphysicianlaborparticipationrateandanefficientdistributionofthembygenderandgeographicalconcernsarecrucialdecisionsofpolicymakers.Objectives:ThisstudyaimedtodeterminethefactorsthataffectthephysicianlaborsupplyinIran.Wefocusedonthepresenceandabsenceofmedicalgraduatestudentsinthelabormarketandwealsoinvestigatedthechangesinlaborsupplyinagegroupsandthedifferencesinmaleandfemalephysicianlaborsupply.Moreover,theunemploymentrateamongphysicianswascalculated.PatientsandMethods:Inthisstudy,weusedpopulationandcensusdataofIranin2011.Dataofthegraduatemedicaluniversitystudentswereextracted.Somedescriptivestatisticslikethephysicianlaborparticipationrateandphysicianunemploymentratewerecalculatedinthisstudy.Also,aregressionmodelforphysicianlaborsupplywasestimated.Results:Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatthephysicianlaborparticipationrateandtheunemploymentratewere61.6%and7.8%,respectively.Bothofthesestatisticswerebetterthantheoveralllaborforcestatisticsofthecountry.Theunemploymentrateofmalephysicianswaslowerthanfemaleonesandthelaborforceparticipationrateformalephysicianswashigherthanfemaleones.Theresultsofthelaborsupplyregressionshowedapositiverelationshipbetweenage,beingmale,beingmarriedandlaborsupply.Moreover,anegativerelationshipwasfoundbetweencontinuingthestudyatuniversitiesandphysicianlaborsupply.Conclusions:Inthisstudy,someadditionalfactsaboutIranianphysicianlaborbehaviorwerepresented.Theseresultsalertpolicymakersaboutthedecisionsinhumanresourcemanagementandplayamajorroleinpolicydecisions.
