【 摘 要 】

Thisstudywasdesignedtotesttheantimicrobialpotentialofethanol,acetoneandethylacetateextractsofleaves,fruitsandflowersofSolanumtrilobatumandpuresaponinfractionextractedfromtheleavesagainstselectedbacterialstrains,Staphylococcusaureus,Escherichiacoli,PseudomonasaeruginosaandKlebsiellapneumoniae.Theantibacterialactivitywastestedbyagardiscdiffusionandagarwelldiffusionmethod.Theplantpartstestedwereextractedwithethanol,acetoneandethylacetate.Almostalltheorganicsolventextractsexhibitedgoodinhibitoryeffectagainsttestedbacterialpathogens.ThemostsusceptibleGram-positivebacterialspecieswasS.aureus,whilethemostsusceptibleGram-negativebacteriawasP.aeruginosa.Puresaponinfractionexhibitedremarkableantibacterialactivitywhencomparedtocrudeextracts.Theantibacterialactivityofextractswasfoundtobecomparativelyhigherthanthestandardantibioticsusedinthisstudy.Theseresultsprovideevidencefortheantagonisticactivityofsteroidalsaponinagainsttestedbacterialpathogens.Further,itcouldbedevelopedasabactericidaldrugtobeusedastherapeuticagentagainstbacterialinfections.
