Theaimofthestudywastoinvestigateeffectsofhighdoselead(Pb)exposureonheart,blood,kidney,liverandbraininrabbitsusingclinical,electrocardiographical(ECG),ultrasonographical,haematological,biochemicalandpathologicalmethods.Theexperimentswereperformedon15maleNewZealandrabbits,dividedintothreeequalgroupsandwereorallygiven80ppmor160ppmPbfor15daysandtheothergroupwasusedascontrol.Administrationof80or160ppmleadsignificantlyincreasedtheactivitiesofserumaspartateaminotransferase(AST),alaninaminotransferase(ALT),lactatedehydrogenase(LDH),creatinephosphokinase(CPK)andalkalinephosphatase(ALP).Hemoglobin(HB)andhematocrit(HCT)valuesweresignificantlylowerin80and160ppmPb-treatedanimalscomparedtothecontrolanimals(p<0.001).QRScomplexeswerewiderandamplitudesofTwavewerelargerintreatmentgroupscomparedtocontrogroup(p<0.05).Severehydropicandvacuolerdegenerationswereseeninhepatocytesandvacuolationanddegenerationofproximaltubularepithelialcellsincortexinthetreatmentgroupshistopathologically.Someneuronswereseverelydegenerated,andsevereneuronnecroseswereseenincornuammonisofbothofthetreatmentgroups.SeveremononuclearcellinfiltrationswereobservedinWirchow-Robinspaces.Inconclusion,deleteriouseffectsobservedinliver,kidneyandbloodinhighdosesofleadadministrationwithsomesimilaritiestochronicoraladministrationoflowdoses.
